About Maya Tropic Tours
Founded almost by accident in 1975 by Jorge and Martha Molanphy, Maya Tropic Tours has been an icon of tourism in Honduras for over 30 years.
It was then that Martha, who worked for a small tour agency at the time, discovered she was short a guide for a tour to Copán the following day. When she arrived home from work, she handed her unsuspecting newlywed husband, Jorge, a guidebook and informed him he was to be the guide for the tour. Not sure what he was getting into, Jorge quickly read through the book while Martha made arrangements with good friends to borrow their small Toyota 1000 for the tour.
After picking up his guests at the airport the next day, Jorge started on the road to Copán — a trip he had never before made. It didn't take long before his guests started asking how long until they got there — a question Jorge quickly averted with "not long now," over and over again. Finally, after three hours on a mostly-dirt road to Copán (at the time), Jorge spotted a small sign stating that they were 5Km away from their destination and quickly informed his undoubtedly nervous guests about it (if you're still out there, we're sorry).
The tour proceeded as planned, and upon their return, the guests handed Jorge a tip and a smile. It was at that point that Jorge realized this was something he could do for the rest of his life: talk to folks about something he loved.
To this day, asking Jorge to relate the story brings a toothy smile to his face, so be sure to bring it up while you're here.
